Francis De Bernardorne was born around 1181, the son of a wealthy cloth merchant.

He enjoyed a privileged upbringing and spent his youth learning the skills of horsemanship and archery, dreaming of becoming a knight. He left school at 14 and became a rebellious teenager who often broke the city curfew and spent his time partying, drinking and indulging in the finest foods.
